This is a different post than what I usually do. Since the trailers for Allegiant came out, theres been controversy over it’s faithfulness to the book. Although Theo James and Producers said Allegiant will be closer to the book than Insurgent was, there is still worry over it by how different it looks. So I’ve decided to compare scenes that we see in the trailers from the film by how they are in the book.
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD
So obviously, cause of how Insurgent ended, with Evelyn killing Jeanine and everyone running towards the wall, we can see that the beginning of the film will be different from the book. Especially since Tris and Christina aren’t in Erudite cells like they were at the start of the book.
So what we can assume is that Evelyn quickly took power after Jeanine was killed(which happens in the book) and she quickly sends faction less people to ceil the wall entrance trapping everyone inside.
Chapter 6-7 (Faction Bowl scene)
So in the film, it seems, Evelyn has a lecture about why its essential that they stay behind the wall and from what we see in the background are the faction bowls on a table behind her, which tells that this might be the same incident that happened in the book where the faction less destroyed the bowls.
Chapter 8: FourTris Date
We can see from the trailers glimpses of what looks to be the date scene that Tris and Four have at the beginning of the book. Feel free to gaze in awe
We could assume that the Allegiant group meeting scene at Candor will be in the film since we’ve seen set photos of Shailene on the truth serum set. This could be where they order Tris, Four and their gang to go over the wall.
Chapter 11: (Going over the wall)
So the obvious different from the book is that this scene is during the day and not at night. Not a big deal, but the night escape was much more intense since they literally couldn’t see anything. But It would’t’ve worked for the film.
And then we get to the most controversial part of the film…
Okay, its red, but its not a big deal, really. They were obviously inspired by the book’s cover with red and orange clouds which are beyond the wall. And don’t forget that there was a purity war before Chicago was put in an experiment so that could be why there’s so much damage and why the clouds are red.
And then we bid farewell to our favorite tattoo artist
😣 R.I.P Tori
Then they are running beyond the wall in red rain, (which will be explained in the film)
Chapter 13: They are met by the Bureau Workers
Then theres this wall thats probably just a forcefield that blocks in Chicago boundaries for their experiment.
The planes look different and more futuristic but thats okay.
Then we see these flying donuts that trigger the bubble containers they are in once they get to the airport.
Then the Chicago O’hare Airport gets a futuristic redesign! (Also, fine as well since it’s not a functioning airport anymore) But you can still see planes around the ground.
Then after the shower scenes, we meet Matthew and we learn that they Bureau has been watching them from inside the city.
Then Tobias meets Nita
And Tris meets David….eww😑
Then we learn about what the Bureau of Genetic Welfare is and that Tris is the only Divergent left, Genetically Pure. And also learn that Tobias is Divergent also.
Fast forward to Tobias and the Rebellion
And then we learn that they plan to ‘erase’Chicago. By this meaning the memory serum (Also In the book)
Then one other difference is that Tris doesn’t go back to Chicago to save it, but it seems they need to go back in order to disable the Memory Serum.
Chapter 50: Memory Serum disable minus the Death of “you know who”
This is where I’d predict Allegiant [Part 1] will break off at as they are shutting down the serum. This is obviously a far part in the book but there will be major themes in the book that will be left out and saved for Ascendant.
Minus, the death of Tris, which you should expect to be different in the next film but for the same great sacrifice.
So I skipped through a few scenes from the film that could match to chapters in the book cause I don’t want to be too accurate and possibly ruin surprise for the film. If you’re worried about Allegiant being non accurate from the book, look back above and see that the scenes that are in the book are in the film. Just go in to the film with an open mind, and embrace the changes, cause focusing on the differences from the book ruins the experience Lionsgate wants you to have!
